CARTOONIST SETH NAMED RECIPIENT OF $10,000 HARBOURFRONT FESTIVAL PRIZETORONTO, September 21, 2011 --- The International Festival of Authors (IFOA) is delighted to announce this year’s recipient of the $10,000 Harbourfront Festival Prize: cartoonist Seth.Award-winning author Seth was selected for this year’s annual Harbourfront Festival Prize based on the merits of his published work. The jury also noted the diversity and range of his illustrations and designs showcased throughout his work in the industry in both his own books as well as others and as an illustrator for the New Yorker. Seth – who was selected by a jury comprising John van Driel (VP Programming & Operations, Classical 96.3 FM), Denise Donlon (Television Host and Producer) and Geoffrey E. Taylor (Director, IFOA) – said of his win:"I was bowled over when I heard I was to be awarded the 2011 Harbourfront Festival Prize. I recall, back in the early 90s talking to fellow cartoonist Chester Brown about the future of our medium and our hopes of its literary acceptance. We weren't optimistic. Frankly, the idea of winning something like this was not within the realm of possibilities at that time so it goes without saying, that I am deeply honoured."Established in 1984, previous Prize recipients include Dionne Brand, Wayson Choy, Christopher Dewdney, Helen Humphreys, Paul Quarrington, Peter Robinson, Jane Urquhart, and Guy Vanderhaege. The prize will be presented to Seth on the closing night of the IFOA (Oct. 29) at 8pm in the Fleck Dance Theatre, followed by readings from the 2011 Scotiabank Giller Prize finalists. Tickets are $25 for the general public. For more information about the Harbourfront Festival Prize and IFOA, and to purchase tickets, the public may call the Harbourfront Centre Box Office at 416-973-4000 or visit readings.org.
