AUTHORS AT HARBOURFRONT CENTRE BEGINS ITS 38TH SEASON WITH
FANTASTICAL FICTION, A STORY OF ENORMOUS LOVE & THE HISTORY OF CANCER

TORONTO, August 30, 2011 ---- Celebrating its 38th season, Authors at Harbourfront Centre (AUTHORS) is thrilled to announce a great fall literary line-up, including readings from some of the shortlisted authors for the 10th annual Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic (September 14) and readings and interviews with author, poet and playwright Sebastian Barry (September 21) and the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Siddhartha Mukherjee (September 29).

September 14: Each year the Sunburst Society comes together to honour the best in speculative fiction recognizing novels and book-length collections of work in both the adult and young adult categories. AUTHORS is delighted to host the event this year with seven of the 10 nominated authors reading from their works. The nominated authors in the adult category are: Guy Gavriel Kay, Under Heaven; Robert J. Sawyer, Watch; Douglas Smith, Chimerascope; S.M. Stirling, A Taint in the Blood; and Hayden Trenholm, Stealing Home. In the young adult category: Holly Bennett, Shapeshifter; Erin Bow, Plain Kate; Charles de Lint, The Painted Boy; Paul Glennon, Bookweirder; and Robert Paul Weston, Dust City. Those appearing at Harbourfront Centre: Bennett, Bow, Glennon, Kay, Smith, Trenholm, and Weston.

September 21: Sebastian Barry’s numerous awards include the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, Costa Book of the Year, Irish-America Fund Literary Award, Christopher Ewart-Biggs Prize, London Critics Circle Award, and Kerry Group Irish Fiction Prize. His latest novel, On Canaan’s Side, is a heartbreaking story about a woman who revisits her past while trying to make sense of the sorrows and troubles in her life. The CBC’s Eleanor Wachtel will interview Barry.

September 29: Assistant professor of medicine and cancer physician, Siddhartha Mukherjee presents his Pulitzer Prize-winning book, The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, which documents the history of cancer and our battle to cure and control the disease. Author and doctor Vincent Lam will interview Mukherjee.

Since its inception in 1974, Authors at Harbourfront Centre has hosted over 7,500 authors from more than 100 countries, including 17 Nobel Laureates. Our season runs from September to June and includes the annual International Festival of Authors (IFOA) (October 19–30, 2011), including YoungIFOA and IFOA Ontario; and the annual ALOUD: a Celebration for Young Readers with Forest of Reading® Festival of Trees™ (May 2012).
