Harbourfront Centre breaks Guinness World Record for
Most Layers in a Layer Cake for Canada’s 144th birthday!

Winners also declared in O! Canada Singing Competition
and Fantasy Strawberry Shortcake Competition

TORONTO, ON (Friday, July 1, 2011) – On a strawberry-infused Canada Day at the heart of downtown Toronto’s waterfront, three Toronto bakeries came together to break the Guinness World Record for “Most Layers in a Layer Cake”.

Harbourfront Centre and its lead summer partner, The Toronto Port Authority, are proud to announce that the final layer count of Harbourfront Centre’s Canada Day layer cake was 255! This breaks the previous record of 230 layers set by Jayn Parenti on July 4, 2006 in Springdale, Arkansas.

Yoshi's Sweets (, Cake Star (, and The Guy Who Bakes ( worked from midnight onwards throughout Canada Day to build the giant confection in celebration of our country’s 144th birthday. With 130 kg of sugar donated by Redpath Sugar and countless amounts of eggs, flour and butter, thousands of Harbourfront Centre visitors shared in a delicious taste of history!

Other winners at Harbourfront Centre’s Canada Day celebrations include Lea Keeley, who won the O! Canada Singing Competition, singing off against three other talented finalists from across the country. The Wedding Cake Shoppe (, owned and operated by sisters Cindy and Sarah Coelho, was victorious in the Fantasy Strawberry Shortcake Competition presented by Redpath Sugar.
