Red Hot Learning Courses & WorkshopsTORONTO, ON (Aug.31, 2010) –This September, Harbourfront Centre is offering a wide range of Red Hot Learning Courses as part of the re-vamped Courses & Workshops programme. Our new term starts Sept. 14 and features an exciting array of courses designed to help adults ignite their creativity! New this year is a series of performing arts workshops that are designed to get everybody moving! Participants can master the rhythms of an African hand drum at Djembe Drumming, learn sultry and passionate dance steps at our Learn to Flamenco dance classes or perfect Brazilian martial-art techniques at Capoeira! Capoeira! Other popular courses like the Urban Indulgence Club encourages participants to explore, indulge and surrender to their favourite vices. It’s an opportunity to sample and learn all about the history, production and processing of some of Toronto’s tastiest offerings including coffee, tea, beer, wine, chocolate and cheese. With over 25 courses to choose from there is something for everyone! Red Hot Learning Courses & Workshops are offered in Contemporary Visual Art & Design, Media Studies, Performing Arts, Literary Arts, Craft Studio Courses and Urban & Cultural Studies. All of our classes are taught by skilled instructors with a fun, hands-on approach that make learning a new skill easy for novice or experienced participants.The fall/winter semester of Red Hot Learning Courses & Workshops runs from September to December 2010. CONTEMPORARY VISUAL ARTS & DESIGNDrawing and Pen & Ink 101Wednesdays, 6:30- 8:30 p.m. Fall: Sept. 15-Oct. 20Learn a combination of techniques using a variety of drawing media ranging from graphite to pen and ink. This course introduces beginner artists to the methods they can use to express themselves. Drawing and Pen & Ink 102 develops skills even further with a demonstration and a still life study. $200Painting 101Tuesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Fall: Sept. 14-Oct. 19Painting 101 is suitable for beginners and those looking to develop their painting skills. In the 101 level, you will learn about line, contour, shape and colour. To apply these skills practically, at the 101 level, you will use acrylic, watercolour and other media. The course focus at the 102 level is finding your personal painting style. $200Paper MakingWednesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Fall: Nov. 10-Dec 15In this environmentally-friendly class, use recycled fibers, plants and seeds to create beautiful handmade cards and gifts. Learn how to mix your own pulp recipes, how to embed pressed plant materials and seeds into paper pulp, and how to design and assemble your own card sets for gift giving or sale. $200Sewing 101Tuesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Fall: Sept. 14-Oct. 19Think of all the unique things you’d wear if you knew how to sew! In Sewing 101, you learn the basics of machine sewing. A bag or purse is the main project in this class. The most exciting part comes in Sewing 102, when you get to turn an old garment into something fabulous, or create your own piece of clothing from a commercial pattern. $200WeavingWednesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Fall: Sept. 15-Oct. 20Weaving is cross-cultural and one of the most ancient art forms. In this course, you will learn how to set up a loom, as well as techniques of weaving and braiding. Using basic supplies, you will also learn how to create a contemporary purse or bag. A field trip to the textile museum is an added bonus in this course. $200
MEDIA STUDIESCreating Your Own Website 101Tuesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Fall: Sept. 14-Oct. 19Dot com yourself! Whether you're creating a website for your home business, blog or just for fun, this course guides you from start to finish. The 101 course is for absolute beginners. In 102, media techniques and emerging technologies are explored. $225DSLR Photography 101Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Fall: Sept. 15-Oct. 20This workshop explains how to use your DSLR in manual mode, learn about exposure, white balance, f-stops, ISO settings, depth of field and metering. You should bring your own DSLR cameras to workshops. The 101 course is for absolute beginners, while manipulation and advanced techniques will be explored in the 102 course. Field trips to local photography galleries may be included! $225LITERARY ARTS & FILMBook Club3rd Tuesday of every month, 6:30-8 p.m. Sept. 21-May 17Toronto's best book club returns! Meet other book lovers, discuss fascinating topics and expand your world. Our monthly book club features guest speakers and books hand-picked from Authors at Harbourfront Centre programming, including the International Festival of Authors. $100Intro to Creative WritingWednesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Fall: Nov. 10-Dec. 15 Learn the techniques and tools to take you one step closer to getting published. The course covers all the fundamentals like character development, plot, setting, structure and more in a fun and relaxed environment. You'll also have the opportunity to have your writing edited by peers and a bestselling author. $200Film and Food Club3rd Wednesday each month, 6:30-9 p.m. Sept. 15-Apr. 20In this monthly class, you'll watch and discuss a film, while enjoying scrumptious treats based on the film's theme. This year features hot homegrown talent, with the occasional visit from local filmmakers. There's no better way to meet new people, learn about our film industry and develop your culinary skills. $30 per session or $225 for the full course.
PERFORMING ARTSCapoeira Capoeira! Tuesdays, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Fall: Nov. 9-Dec. 14Capoeira is an ancient, movement-based Afro-Brazilian art form combining a number of different elements. This introductory course covers all aspects including martial-arts, dance, music, acrobatics, culture, and language. It focuses on developing the rhythm, reflexes, balance, co-ordination and increasing strength and flexibility. $120Djembe DrummingSaturdays, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Fall: Sept. 18-Oct. 9Discover your soul's rhythm! A djembe is a skin-covered hand drum shaped like a large goblet played with bare hands. Through this series of interactive rhythm and drumming exercises, learn and develop your overall understanding of rhythms, tradition and culture, using traditional djembe instruments. $120Learn to FlamencoTuesdays, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Fall: Sept. 14-Oct. 19Flamenco is more than simply a style of dance. It's a way of living, combining the soul's spirituality with the body's physicality. This course teaches you this legendary and sensual dance of Spain. You'll also learn the history behind Flamenco’s steps and music. $180
URBAN AND CULTURAL STUDIESUrban Indulgence Club 3rd Thursday each month, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Fall: Sept. 16-Apr. 20Explore, indulge and surrender to one – if not all – of your favourite vices in this course. Each session focuses on the following favourites: coffee, tea, beer, wine, chocolate, cheese, and more. Learn all about the history, production and processing. Then comes the most important part – sampling! A fun and informative course for people who love to spoil themselves. $40 per session or $300 for all sessions.

This one-day workshop teaches you the fundamentals of creating hand-bound books, using various binding and cutting techniques. At the end of the day, you'll have your very own custom-made book – and the skills to create more. $180Demystifying the Digital CameraOne day workshop, Saturday, Dec. 11, 10a.m-1 p.m. This one-day workshop explains in non-technical terms the basics of digital photography and how it differs from conventional, film-based photography. Your holiday photos will be the best ones ever!
