For Immediate Release

TORONTO, August 30, 2010 ----- The Directors of five leading international literary festivals came together in Edinburgh last week to discuss their partnership under the banner of The Word Alliance, a collaboration that will create a platform for artistic collaboration, further expansion of online content, professional, audience and organizational development, and an international touring programme for authors. The International Festival of Authors (IFOA) is proud to announce its participation in The Word Alliance, launched today at the Edinburgh International Book Festival in Scotland.

In addition to the International Festival of Authors and the Edinburgh International Book Festival, the Word Alliance network includes the Bookworm International Literary Festival in Beijing, the International Literature Festival in Berlin and the Melbourne Writers Festival. It is intended that the group will ultimately expand to include Africa, India, the USA, and South America.

Geoffrey E. Taylor, Director of the IFOA said: "The Word Alliance is the natural next step for the IFOA and its friends from festivals around the world. Not only will this new alliance allow us to continue to do what we do best, but further our connections to present international authors on a Canadian stage and help facilitate the presentation of Canadian authors on stages across the globe."

The development of this collaboration, and the inaugural touring programme, is supported by Creative Scotland’s Resilience Fund and the Scottish Government’s Edinburgh Festivals Expo Fund.

Fiona Hyslop, the Minister for Culture, Scotland said: “I’m delighted that the Edinburgh International Book Festival is leading the way in this unique collaboration with five leading international literary festivals which will promote Scottish writing worldwide. The Word Alliance, supported by our Expo fund, will allow Scotland’s talented authors to be showcased at International Book Festivals year round and bring even more leading writers to Scotland. That type of collaboration is exactly what our Expo fund was designed for and the type of innovative action that is required to support Scottish talent during these tough times.”
