Harbourfront Centre’s World Stage 2009-10 Season Concludes with the Canadian Premiere of Giselle from Ireland’s Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre

TORONTO, ON (Apr. 8, 2010) – The conclusion of another remarkable season of performing arts at Harbourfront Centre’s World Stage draws near with Ireland’s Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre and the uncompromising opus Giselle. This radical reinterpretation of the classic ballet runs for five nights at Harbourfront Centre’s Fleck Dance Theatre for its Canadian premiere, May 4 through May 8, 2010.

Irish director and choreographer Michael Keegan-Dolan leads an international ensemble cast in a moving two-step between the forces of laughter and disaster, blending speech, song, stunning imagery and superb choreography in an uncompromising production on the very edges of theatre and dance. In the small town of Ballyfeeny, where the cloud hangs low and people keep their secrets for good reasons, a lonely Giselle McCreedy cares for her abusive brother. The town’s inhabitants are quick to exchange gloom for glamour when the line-dancing Bratislavan Albrecht arrives in town, and for the first time Giselle dares to dream of escape.

“This is not a rural idyll Giselle with tutus and tulle. It is a world of dark secrets that unravel when a naive country girl falls for a bisexual line-dancer who has boot-scooted into town.” – The Sydney Morning Herald, (Jan. 2010)

Keegan-Dolan was born in Dublin and has choreographed for the English National Opera and the National Theatre and the National Theatre in London, as well as many European opera houses and the Houston Grand Opera.

Contains strong language, material of a sexual nature and scenes which some may find disturbing. Not suitable for children.

Giselle is the second Irish production of World Stage 2009-10, which started the season with Druid Theatre Company’s The Walworth Farce, and bookends an initiative to bolster and foster a creative collaboration with Irish works and performance.
