What is the Latin Alternative? It’s the hybrid of cafe con leche, of rock and timbales, of hip-hop and jalapenos, of new music with a subtle Latino accent. Latin Alternative music is a loose, inclusive yet progressive genre spanning but not limited to rock, hip hop, roots and electronic music, all with a distinct Latin flavour.

The Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) is the world’s only major conference focused on marketing Spanish-language alternative music. Started in New York, currently residing in Los Angeles, and now with conferences in Toronto, Mexico City and Buenos Aires, LAMC is truly international. The event brings exposure, networking and educational opportunities to artists and business people, along with spectacular concerts and special events for Latin alternative music fans. This second edition of LAMC Canada follows an attention-grabbing first year in 2003 with progressive new events exemplifying the diversity, passion and power of Latin alternative music.

LAMC 2004 panel discussions are a place where artists, labels, funding agencies, managers, agents, companies and media meet, knocking heads to continue building the genre. Key industry experts will debate the status of Latin alternative music on the Canadian scene and offer career advice to independent musicians. Hosted by Richard Crouse (Reel To Real and CBC Groove Shinny) and Diego Fuentes (MuchMoreMusic Clip Trip), artist Q&As including Steve Berlin from Los Lobos and Kemo from Delinquent Habits bring insight into the artists personalities and their work.

Starting July 11 at Lula Lounge, the LAMC Battle of the Bands "La Gran Lucha" gets top Toronto talent competing for a showcase spot at LAMC Los Angeles 2004. Each night of "La Gran Lucha" features a headline performance by international artists who will inspire the up-and-coming bands in the battle. Los Mocosos headline the night of July 11, after round one as bands wrestle for the battle of the bands title and prizes. On July 15, round two of the battle is headlined by members of the Norte Collective. The finale to Toronto’s battle features Colectivo and Plan C, on Friday July 17, in Harbourfront Centre’s Brigantine Room.

In a special MRP Music Group presentation, reggaeton firecracker Fito Blanko heats up Harbourfront Centre’s Brigantine Room, June 17 at 10:30pm. Fito Blanko is a young Panamanian-born ball of musical energy who’s reggaeton sound (a Latin-reggae-dancehall blend) continues in the tradition of Tego Calderon for a new generation of Latin American and Jamaican music lovers. “Fito Blanko is definitely one of the hottest rising stars in Latin Music” - Urban Latino Magazine USA

Two spectacular concerts, co-presented with Ritmo y Color at Harbourfront Centre, tear up Harbourfront Centre’s CIBC Stage at 9:30 pm, July 16 and 17. Friday evening, revolutionary Venezuelan band Los Amigos Invisibles perform their funky mix of Latin-flavoured house and nu jazz. Saturday, roots rock icons Los Lobos get audiences dancing with their gritty, ever-evolving sound.

Latin Hip Hop on Film, coordinated in partnership with AluCine Film and Video Festival, showcases controversial and thought-provoking documentaries Resistance: Hip Hop In Colombia and Pass the Mic, on the afternoons of July 17 and 18.
