World Stage Returns and Launches as the Exclusive Canadian Host of Enda Walsh’s The Walworth Farce

Ireland’s Renowned Druid Theatre Company Kicks off North American Tour of The Walworth Farce at Harbourfront Centre’s World Stage

TORONTO, ON (Sept. 9, 2009)Harbourfront Centre is delighted to host the Canadian premiere of acclaimed playwright Enda Walsh’s brilliant play The Walworth Farce, by Druid Theatre Company of Galway, Ireland. The first production of the World Stage 2009-10 series is also the exclusive Canadian destination of the play, Oct. 6–10, at the Fleck Dance Theatre. Audiences in Toronto will be the first to see The Walworth Farce before it embarks on a coast-to-coast U.S. tour.

The Walworth Farce centres around an Irish father and his two sons who spend their days in a shabby council flat on the Walworth Road in London as they try to come to terms with their past in Ireland. It combines hilarious moments with shocking realism, and delivers an achingly tender insight into what happens when we become stuck in the stories we tell ourselves about our lives.

This absurdly funny yet tender play has enjoyed phenomenal success in Edinburgh, New York, London and Ireland, winning the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe First Award and wowing audiences and critics alike. World Stage also hosted the North American premiere of Enda Walsh’s breakthrough play Disco Pigs in 1998, which was later made into a major motion picture released in 2001. Druid Theatre Company brought the North American premiere of the play At the Black Pig’s Dyke to World Stage in 1994.
