Harboufront Centre’s HATCH: emerging performance projects and surprise performance present
Save us!! [Hamletown]

A work-in-progress performance showing:
A dance party, blissed out meditation, boredom, suicide, an attempt at Hamlet, documentary footage, failure, and aspects of the Jonestown massacre.

Friday March 7th & Saturday March 8th 2008
8 p.m.

Harbourfront Centre’s HATCH: emerging performance projectspresent the premiere presentation of surprise performance’s newest creation Save us!! [Hamletown]. This work-in-progress incorporates classical text, original writing, music, dance, and video. A combination of theatre and performance art, surprise performance attempts to create a daring, risky, and electric new work.

Save us!! [Hamletown] is about a collective of artists who remove themselves from society feeling they can create a better life away from mainstream culture. This performance charts their initial success, their parties, relationships, sudden deaths and rapid decline into chaos. It explores and examines how even with the best of intentions, a utopia can become a nightmare.

surprise performance was formed in January 2007 by Chad Dembski as a contemporary performance company dedicated to the creation of original new work. Although a newly established company, Dembski is a Dora award winning theatre artist with over 12 years of professional creation based experience. Dembski was the founder of the inter-disciplinary performance company, The Oomph!! Group (1997-2005) and is a current associate creation artist with Public Recordings (a contemporary performance/dance company) and Small Wooden Shoe (Dedicated to the Revolutions series 2006-2008). The company’s first project was an outstanding adaptation of Carnal [The Ten Obstructions] by Ian Carpenter and Gil Garret, commissioned by Ian Carpenter for Buddies in Bad Times Theatre’s Audience Relocation series.

Save us!! [Hamletown] is written and directed by Chad Dembski (Dora winner 2004 – something about a river – Bluemouth Inc., Small Wooden Shoe – Dedicated to the Revolutions, and Public recordings – /Dance/Songs/, TAPE – Crate Productions – Gladstone Hotel). Save us!! [Hamletown] features a cast of six performers including Ulysses Castellanos (Mammalian Diving Reflex – Diplomatic Immunities, MOCCA, the Drake Hotel), Evan Webber (One Reed theatre – Nor the Cavaliers Who Come With Us),Michael Wheeler (Praxis theatre, Co-Artistic Director), Andrea Davis (STO Union – Recent Experiences), Eve Wylden (U. of Toronto – Titus Andronicus) and Michael Challenor (Second City).

Save us!! [Hamletown] will be presented over two nights as part of Harbourfront Centre’s HATCH series at the Studio Theatre at York Quay Centre, 235 Queens Quay West. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students, seniors or members of Equity and CADA. For tickets, the public can call the Harbourfront Centre Box Office at 416-973-4000.
