Microcredit >> small loans with a huge impact on global poverty
expert ERIC THURMAN speaks at View Points - A Billion Bootstraps
Thursday October 4 (7 p.m.) at Harbourfront Centre ($5 admission)

Microcredit has emerged as the little engine that could help transform the way we view and deal with global poverty. Find out the issues, the methods and the impact that microcredit is currently having worldwide when international consultant and author Eric Thurman comes to speak at View Points - A Billion Bootstraps on Thursday October 4 at Harbourfront Centre. This one hour event ($5 admission at the door) will be hosted by prominent Toronto bookseller Ben McNally.

Last year microcredit compounded its international profile when the Nobel Peace Prize was coawarded to Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank. For more than 30 years both have helped develop this grassroots business-driven philosophy into a global financial force copied around the globe. With more than 80% of the reported 113,000,000 loans being given to women, microcredit has also directly empowered those often left out of traditional aid arrangements.

Eric Thurman, through his own investments of both money and experience, has been an influential exponent of microcredit first as the president of large microfinance firm Opportunity International and later as a cofounder of Geneva Global - a consulting firm directing wealthy individuals and foundations where and how to invest their philanthropic dollars. Now, Thurman has coauthored the book A Billion Bootstraps: Microcredit, Barefoot Banking, and The Business Solution for Ending Poverty (2007, McGraw-Hill Ryerson), which unearths the roots of the microcredit revolution and illustrates how “barefoot bankers” enable impoverished people to start small businesses, support their families, and improve local economies. The book reviews microcredit's history and provides advice on how to work with microcredit institutions. (More information at
