John Mather Award Presented to Harbourfront Centre’s Melanie EganTORONTO, June 11, 2007 – Harbourfront Centre proudly announced today that Melanie Egan, Head of the Craft Department is a recipient of this year’s John Mather Award. Selected for the award by the Ontario Crafts Council for her ongoing contributions to the field of contemporary Canadian craft, Egan is one of three recipients in 2007. A career veteran in the field of Canadian craft, Egan has been working with Harbourfront Centre for 21 of her over 25 years. An Honours graduate of Jewellery Arts from George Brown College, Egan was an artist-in-residence in the Jewellery section of The Craft Studio from 1986-89 before becoming Assistant Coordinator of the Studio in 1989. In 1991 she was promoted to Coordinator and was appointed Head of the Craft Department in 2002. Throughout her rich career she has helped to shape and foster the careers of some of Canada’s best known emerging craft artists. She is also responsible for increasing awareness of craft as a possible career path for students, and helping to organize major craft conferences in her ongoing dedication to raising the profile of craft as a vital part of Canadian culture.Established in 1981, the John Mather Award is given to an Ontario resident who has displayed a commitment and passion for craft over an extended period of time. The medals were presented at the Ontario Crafts Council Annual General Meeting on Friday, June 8, 2007. At that time Egan also received an Honourary Life Membership to the Ontario Crafts Council.
