Harbourfront Centre announces fun-filled, free family activities for Sunday, May 20 & Victoria Day Monday, May 21TORONTO, Monday, May 10, 2007—Harbourfront Centre presents Spring Family Fun, a host of creative opportunities for families to spend time together with engaging, interactive and hands-on activities. Families can participate in lantern-making workshops that are part of Carnivalissima, a spectacular celebration of the world's most lavish carnivals, enjoy interesting activities along with a dynamic dance-along lawn party with the infectious Funky Mamas. Events take place at Harbourfront Centre, 235 Queens Quay West, on Sunday, May 20 and Victoria Day Monday, May 21, from noon to 5 p.m., unless otherwise noted. Admission is free. Harbourfront Centre is inviting families to its lantern-making workshops to help create carnival lanterns for Carnivalissima’s spectacular FireWalk, a participatory night parade on Saturday, June 9 with lanterns, lights, fire, circus and stilt walkers. Two artists lead drop-in style lantern-making workshops from 1 to 5 p.m.on Sundays in May, (May 13, 20 and 27), as well as on Victoria Day Monday, May 21. Families can produce one lantern as a group project or work more independently as they explore the idea of identity and creative ways to express who they are through their construction.The Funky MamasA dance-along lawn party with the Funky Mamas takes place from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 20. Hailing from Guelph, the Funky Mamas, have been shaking up the adult-friendly children's entertainment scene since 1998. With hundreds of shows under their belts and 12 children between them, the Mamas really know what kids like. With over a dozen instruments, they play blues, bluegrass and folk with a sprinkling of pop and swing. With original tunes about fishing trips, favourite animals, messiness, the alphabet and bedtime blues, the Mamas paint a musical picture that inspires creativity and lots of smiles. These Mamas know how to have a good time: happy parents and laughing children. Guaranteed fun for the whole family!Gallery KidsGallery Kids is a family friendly discovery of contemporary art. Using the York Quay Centre exhibition, Love Transcending Boundaries, as their inspiration, children and families take part in an artist-facilitated, hands-on workshop with a variety of Laurentien art supplies to create their own works of art. Gallery Kids is presented by Laurentien.Interactive ActivitiesFamilies get an exciting sneak-preview into Harbourfront Centre’s outstanding camps programme. Guided by Camp Directors, families are encouraged to create works of art that are socially conscious and that give voice to issues that are relevant to them. Throughout the afternoon, children can participate in a found-object drum circle and parachute games.
