Become Unbound at Harbourfront Centre

Premiere Dance Theatre - 60 min.
Tuesday, April 17 until Saturday, April 21
Q & A, Wednesday, April 18

Toronto, Thursday, April 5, 2007Harbourfront Centre’s New World Stage International Performance series presents, in co-presentation with DanceWorks, Unbound, the latest work of choreographer Wen Wei Wang.

Weaving former Chinese traditions and modern perspectives, Unbound is an intense and stylish exploration of beauty, power dynamics, and gender relationships. A dance of three men and three women, Unbound transcends cultural origins to unravel universally familiar themes of relationships, sexuality and emotions.

As the starting point of his choreography, Wen Wei Wang uses ancient Chinese practices of binding women’s feet in pursuit of status and an impossible erotic ideal. The shoes are used as a symbol in this performance, which brings a provocative, contemporary perspective to reflect on the ideas behind the custom.

Unbound brilliantly unwound all the levels of sexual bondage and attraction”
- The Ottawa Citizen

Under the artistic direction of Wen Wei Wang, Wen Wei Dance creates performance events that are informed by the artistic director’s experiences, living and dancing professionally in two cultures, and his interests in the multiculturalism society in which he now lives. With one foot in Canada and the other stretching back to China, Wen Wei Wang creates startling and powerful works that bridge both cultures, offering a fresh voice in Dance.

“The complexity of Wang’s vocabulary is a joy to watch: he moves bodies in space with what has become a sophisticated fusion of cultural styles.”
- The Dance Current
