Toronto elementary schools compete at Harbourfront Centre in the 2006-07 TDSB Team Chess Finals
on April 16

Toronto, April 4, 2007—On Monday, April 16, 120 students will compete in the 2006-2007 Toronto District School Board Team Chess Finals presented in association with Harbourfront Centre Camps. Students from 24 elementary schools from across Toronto will participate for the chance at winning the coveted Masters Trophy. The Chess Team Finals take place on Monday, April 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Harbourfront Centre, 235 Queens Quay West.

Many of the participants are regular campers at Harbourfront Centre’s popular Chess Challenge Camp. The game of chess allows students to enhance their problem-solving skills and also their interpersonal and life skills. From beginners to advanced, chess enthusiasts learn the art of chess from instructor Peter Boross-Harmer who is also the organizer of the Team Chess Finals and a Vice-Principal with the Toronto District School Board. Boross-Harmer has been playing chess for over 30 years and continues to pursue a competitive chess career, having achieved a master's ranking. At Harbourfront Centre, Chess Challenge campers are taught elementary techniques such as how to open a game, defend a piece, checkmate, avoid stalemate and more, while experienced players pick up additional tips to improve their game. At Harbourfront Centre, Chess Challenge Camp is offered during March Break and the summer, from July 3 to August 31, along side 30 other dynamic, creative and exciting camps.

The Team Chess Finals are the culminating event after four qualifying tournaments held on different occasions throughout March. The top eight schools representing each of the three divisions—Primary Division (grades 1-3), Junior Division (4-to 6) and Senior Division (grades 7-8)—will be on-hand to compete in round-robin games with each school team playing every other school. Each school team consists of five players ranked in order of strength. The top three school teams from each division will win awards.
