Tibet Festival at Harbourfront Centre - April 25 to April 30, 2004

TORONTO, April 16, 2004-The Canadian Tibetan Association of Ontario presents a week of Tibetan cultural celebrations at Harbourfront Centre beginning April 25 through April 30. Timed to coincide with the Dalai Lama's visit to Toronto on Sunday April 25, Tibet Festival at Harbourfront Centre features a wide array of spiritual and cultural events. From Sand Mandalas to films to lectures to a photography and Tibet Museum exhibit, all events showcase the strength of Tibetan cultural expression locally and internationally. Tibet Festival at Harbourfront Centre highlights (full schedule below):

Sunday April 25: The Tibet Festival is launched by a ribbon cutting opening ceremony (9:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.) followed by the ancient and rarely performed Sang Sol (Incense Ritual) from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sang Sol is peformed by The Tashi Lhunpo Monks accompanied by Tashi Sholpa (good luck dance) by the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, India. Both groups bless and sanctify the day of the Dalai Lama's visit to Toronto. Throughout the day a wide variety of activites take place at Harbourfront Centre including the construction of a Sand Mandala, lectures by prominent Tibetans, arts and children's activities as well as a cultural show and the screening of the Emmy nominated documentary Compassion in Exile.

Monday April 26 to Friday April 30: Throughout the week daily activities include the continuing creation of the Sand Mandala, a photography and Tibet Museum exhibition, and a daily screening of films like Kundun, The Forbidden Team, Reincarnation of Khensur Rinpoche and Escape from Tibet. The Tibet Festival at Harbourfront Centre concludes with an exciting cultural show on Friday April 30 in the Brigantine Room (tickets $18).
