Travel to the land of gingerbread houses as Hänsel and Gretel visit Harbourfront Centre

TORONTO, April 13, 2004 – Embark on a musical adventure filled with gingerbread houses, a greedy witch and the triumph of innocence over evil as Camp Musical des Laurentides brings the famous Brothers Grimm fairytale Hänsel and Gretel to life. Opera vocalists are accompanied by pianist Olivier Godin (part of the Music with Bite family concert series) set to take place on Sunday, April 25, at 1 p.m., at Harbourfront Centre, 235 Queens Quay West. Tickets are $8 each or $25 for four tickets. For tickets and information, the public can call 416-973-4000 or visit

With music by German composer Engelbert Humperdinck, Hänsel and Gretel is a musical story told in three acts that highlights the intricate, and inspired score containing orchestration and melodies based on the speech rhythms of traditional popular songs of Westphalia. In capturing the atmosphere of the fairytale, the performance by Camp Musical des Laurentides will continue to define Hänsel and Gretel as one of the most timeless stories embraced by past and future generations.

Under the musical direction of Louise-Andrée Baril and Raymond Dessaints, the Camp Musical des Laurentides opera workshop was created in the summer of 2001 to provide young singers with an intensive career experience in opera. By enrolling in workshops and classes led by Baril, interns learn how to master a role, both vocally and theatrically. They also work intensively with experienced teachers to learn the stagecraft, while enjoying the opportunity to prepare recordings, auditions, and performances such as a chance to participate in the 2003-2004 Jeunesses Musicales of Canada’s Desjardins Concert tour.

Music with Bite is an intimate, refreshing experience; children can sit up close to the artists and after the concert ask them questions, while enjoying a complimentary milk beverage and cookies. Music with Bite, a co-production with Jeunesses Musicales of Ontario, is designed to bring families to Harbourfront Centre to give them the opportunity to sample music of all styles in a friendly, accessible format. All of the artists selected to perform at the concerts bring an element of education and entertainment to their programmes. Jeunesses Musicales of Canada has, since 1949, dedicated its work to musical excellence and the promotion of music for young people. Jeunesses Musicales of Canada is a member of Jeunesses Musicales International.

Music with Bite is co-produced with Jeunesses Musicales of Ontario with the support of the Government of Canada, the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council and the Ontario Arts Council.
