Toronto, January 18, 2006—Harbourfront Centre President Zanana Akande welcomed Conservative Party Leader Stephen Harper’s commitment to long-term funding for Harbourfront Centre.

At a campaign event in Toronto this morning, Mr. Harper announced that, if elected, a Conservative government would maintain Harbourfront Centre’s current level of funding and that it would also make a multi-year commitment to sustain the organization over the longer term.

“We welcome today’s announcement of a long-term commitment to Harbourfront Centre,” said Ms. Akande. “Multi-year funding, at appropriate levels, is what we know is required to secure a brighter future for Toronto’s favourite waterfront attraction. Through his announcement today, Mr. Harper has recognized the important role Harbourfront Centre plays as a leading presenter of artistic, cultural, and recreational programs reflecting the diversity of our society.”

Attracting more than 12 million visits per year, Harbourfront Centre is one of Toronto’s most popular year-round destinations. For more than 30 years, Harbourfront Centre has been a leading presenter of artistic and cultural programming, recognized the world over. Furthermore, as the principal point of access to Toronto’s central waterfront, Harbourfront Centre has also played a key role in the revitalization of the water’s edge.
