CompagnieKafig -- France

March 2-6, 2004 -- Premiere Dance Theatre

TORONTO, February18, 2004-Harbourfront Centre welcomes the return of Compagnie Kafig under the direction of acclaimed artistic director and founder Mourad Merzouki. Cie. Kafig created a buzz among younger dance enthusiasts when it first appeared in Canada as part of the 01/02 Harbourfront Centre dance season. The company's most recent contemporary work, Corps est Graphique, takes place at Harbourfront Centre's Premiere Dance Theatre, Tuesday, March 2-March 6, 2004. Tickets range in price from $21-$37.50 and are available through the Harbourfront Centre Box Office at www.harbourfront.on.ca or 416-973-4000.

Under the creative eye of Mourad Merzouki, Cie Kafig unites hip hop, poetry, visual art, humour and North African melodies in a steady wave of rhythm. Since its formation in 1996, the group has integrated athletic street movement with stylized French, North African, and Andalusian choreography - as well as capoeira, mime, and gymnastics. Cie. Kafig's previous works - Kafig (1996), Recital (1998) and Dix Versions (2001) have propelled the company into the international limelight.

Merzouki's endeavor to engage urban youth extends beyond choreographic creations, introducing hip-hop and contemporary dance culture to the public through their performances and in workshops and master classes. The company's willingness to teach reflects Merzouki's vision, that sharing dance is as vital as creating dance.

Mourad Merzouki and Kader Attou of La Compagnie Accrorap join forces in this latest piece which includes the collaboration of Algerian calligrapher Mekech Mouchkin. Corps est Graphique, which premiered in Lyon, France on September 12, 2003, combines the aspects of calligraphy, choreography and a sensitivity for the nature of male-female relationships.

Tickets range in price from $21 - $37.50. Evening performances begin at 8 p.m.. Tickets are available through the Harbourfront Centre Box Office at 416-973-4000 or online at www.harbourfront.on.ca . Harbourfront Centre Dance Season is presented with the assistance of Canadian Heritage
