INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF AUTHORS ANNOUNCES 2013 PRELIMINARY LINE-UP
Participants include Margaret Atwood, Joseph Boyden, Anne Carson, Douglas Coupland, Stephen King, Sam Lipsyte, Lisa Moore

TORONTO, June 10, 2013 ----- Authors at Harbourfront Centre is delighted to announce the preliminary line-up for the 34th annual International Festival of Authors (IFOA), October 24 to November 3, 2013. For 11 days each fall, the IFOA presents literary talent from across the globe in a number of events including readings, panel discussions, onstage interviews, book signings and a wide range of special presentations. This year’s Festival affords audiences more opportunities than ever to meet their favourite authors and encounter new voices.

The IFOA’s preliminary line-up includes over 60 authors writing in categories from literary fiction to memoir, poetry to thrillers. Authors confirmed thus far include: literary legends Margaret Atwood and Stephen King; a Canadian canon of Dennis Bock, Joseph Boyden, Catherine Bush, Jowita Bydlowska, Douglas Coupland, Lauren B. Davis, Lewis DeSoto, Steven Galloway, Don Gillmor, Douglas Glover, Wayne Grady, Charlotte Gray, Helen Humphreys, Ann Ireland, Wayne Johnston, Annabel Lyon, Margaret MacMillan, Elizabeth Ruth, Mary Swan, Ania Szado and Michael Winter; international heavyweights Nadeem Aslam, Jami Attenberg, Sarah Dunant, Thomas Enger, Charlotte Grimshaw, Aleksandar Hemon, Fiona Kidman, Rachel Kushner, Kim Scott and C.K. Stead; debut novelists Shani Boianjiu, Janie Chang, Sahar Delijani, Viola Di Grado, Owen King, Amanda Leduc, Anthony Marra and D.W. Wilson; poets Anne Carson, Warren Clements, Beatriz Hausner, Mathew Henderson, Christine McNair, Anne Michaels and Peter Norman; mystery and thriller specialists Kelly Braffet, George Pelecanos, Marisha Pessl and Andrew Pyper; short story authors Theodora Armstrong, S. Bear Bergman, Cynthia Flood and Sam Lipsyte; International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award winner for 2013, Kevin Barry; Canada Reads 2013 winner, Lisa Moore; renowned cartoonist Seth; distinguished illustrator Bernice Eisenstein and popular children’s authors Gordon Korman and Frank Viva.

Tickets to four IFOA special events go on sale this Tuesday, June 11 and can be purchased through readings.org or by phone at 416-973-4000.

Special events include the IFOA opening night PEN Canada Benefit: Double Feature with Stephen and Owen King. Proceeds go to PEN Canada to support their ongoing and vital work for freedom of expression (www.pencanada.ca).

In addition, there will be readings by the authors nominated for Canada’s three leading literary fiction awards: the Governor General’s Literary Award (Oct. 28), the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize (Oct. 30) and, on IFOA closing night, the Scotiabank Giller Prize (Nov. 2), along with the awarding of the $10,000 Harbourfront Festival Prize.

Also available this year is a Festival Flex Pass. This is a chance to purchase a bundle of 10 tickets for one low price of $120 (plus a service charge). Purchase a Festival Flex Pass to reserve tickets in advance without committing to specific performances and save money! Tickets can be obtained over the phone or in person for any regular-priced event ($18) during the Festival in any combination, subject to availability.

Tickets go on sale in September and are priced at $18/$15 for supporters/free for students and youth 25 and under (subject to availability). Some exceptions apply. Since its inception in 1974, Authors at Harbourfront Centre has hosted over 8,000 authors from more than 100 countries, including 20 Nobel Laureates.
