Bear witness to life at KAMP (CAMP) as you’ve never seen it before, coming to World Stage
May 23-26, 2013

Toronto, ON (April 24, 2013) – Witness a day in the life of Auschwitz with KAMP, the work from Dutch theatre company Hotel Modern coming to World Stage May 23-26, 2013. Fusing puppetry with music and film, KAMP is a unique and chilling portrayal of one of the darkest chapters in human history.

A sprawling scale model based on Auschwitz fills the stage. Thousands of eight-centimetre tall hand made puppets populate the camp. Performers manipulate the puppets through their daily activities while miniature cameras project their activities on a huge screen as they struggle to survive. While no words are spoken, atmospheric sound effects and music convey a rich and haunting cinematic experience in the theatre.

World Stage artistic director Tina Rasmussen comments: “This work brings the immediacy of liveness in a highly cinematic experience. This is the best example of what it means to witness. In your act of witnessing you also question your role as audience, which is something that I hope World Stage patrons will ask themselves.”
