Still Standing You Reveals the Strength of Friendship at World Stage
April 23 & 24 and 26 & 27, 2013

Toronto, ON (March 28, 2013) – A real friend stabs you in the front. Or in the case of Belgian-Portuguese dance production Still Standing You, slaps you on the back, hits you with his belt and then gives you a good cuddle. Friends, producers and stars of the show, Pieter Ampe and Guilherme Garrido/CAMPO explore the dynamic of friendship, pushing each other to their limits at World Stage April 23 & 24 and 26 & 27, 2013.

Notions of touch, tenderness, violence and struggle are addressed through the medium of men’s bodies. Funny, disturbing and moving all at once, Still Standing You takes the audience on an embodied ride through the spectrum of emotions that accompany close friendship.

World Stage 2013 artistic director Tina Rasmussen comments: “Two men on stage investigating the nature of friendship and intimacy, conversation and competition, fraternity, brotherhood, and love is something that we don’t talk about that much. I think that kind of openness and vulnerability is something that we should all want to go and see.”

CAMPO is a Ghent-based arts centre that creates and presents work at all stages of development on a national and international scale. The first piece of Pieter Ampe and Guilherme Garrido, Still Difficult Duet (2007) was produced at the centre through an artistic residency and toured all over Europe to critical acclaim.

Pieter Ampe is a Belgian artist whose professional career dates back to his time as a student. He has collaborated with diverse choreographers and performance artists including Jan Decorte, Frans Poelstra & Robert Steijn, Roland Seidel, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Anne Juren. Ampe’s a coming community, produced at CAMPO with Guilherme Garrido, Nuno Lucas and Hermann Heisig, premiered in 2012 at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels.

Guilherme Garrido is a dancer, musician and occasional writer and videographer. He divides his time between his native Portugal where he co-founded the cultural centre 555; Belgium and the Netherlands where he continues to work with various choreographers including Maria Clara Villa-Lobos, Ibrahim Quraishi and Tommy Noonan. His first solo work Go John premiered in 2011 at Fresh Festival, BUDA in Belgium. In 2012 he premiered his first group piece Best Beast as choreographer at the international performance center, Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin.
