China’s TAO Dance Theater captivates World Stage
March 20-23, 2013

Toronto, ON (February 21, 2013) – Pioneering a new direction from the historical tradition of Chinese dance, World Stage presents a rare opportunity to witness emergent contemporary art from China. Having sold out its run in Ottawa and in Montreal, TAO Dance Theater’s Weight x3 & 2, brought to World Stage with the support of Manulife Financial, is a milestone performance that is not to be missed.

TAO Dance Theater has solidified its reputation as one of China’s most innovative dance companies with rave reviews both at home and abroad. Founded in 2008 by artistic director Tao Ye, the company has traversed the Chinese festival circuit, stormed onto the scene in Europe and collaborated with leading artists across diverse fields including theatre, music, cinema, visual art and installation art. With its visionary contemporary dance style, TAO Dance Theater has set itself apart as a company to watch.

World Stage 2013 artistic director Tina Rasmussen comments: “What is really beautiful about TAO is their meditative aesthetic merging with a rigour in the exploration of contemporary expression. Honouring the old, the company aims to push forward into the future, shaping the vocabulary of contemporary dance in China.”

Limits are stretched and modes of communication challenged in this series of pieces. Weight x3 (excerpt) aims to push the boundaries of physical practice, revealing the scope and capabilities of movement. In the second show, 2, dancers’ bodies fold, invert and collapse in a harmonious act of mirroring. Hailed for their precision timing, fluidity of movement and trailblazing artistic vision, TAO Dance Theater’s latest offering is sure to amaze and delight.
